Hockey Ability for Life
Longevity is the Game
Prepare for some inspiration – I recently witnessed something that blew my mind!
My friend and fellow ATG Coach, Geoff Reed, accomplished the incredible feat of dunking a basketball at the age of 46, overcoming two decades of debilitating injuries.
It got me thinking – how can we replicate this level of longevity and world-class ability in hockey?
Just look at the legends: Jaromir Jagr, still dominating in his Czech professional league. Gordie Howe played into his 50s, and Patrick Marleau logged nearly every eligible game for over 20 straight years.
The real game here is longevity.
Here’s also a story from my good friend Charlie. When I lived on the East Coast United States, we would practice every chance we got. He’s in his mid 60’s and still trains like he’s in his 20’s!
Man, I want that for myself in 40 years!
Now, here's the kicker – what's your choice between longevity and sacrificing your body for a mere chance to win? It might sound a bit absurd, doesn't it? Going all out for that one shot at victory versus playing for 20+ years with 20+ chances to win.
Let's embrace the latter.
There's absolutely no need to sacrifice your body recklessly in the pursuit of a single win, even if it’s for a championship (if your team is good, you don’t have to worry about doing this). We're talking about playing the long game, enjoying the sport for decades, and increasing your chances of victory along the way.
Think about it – 20+ chances to win or putting everything on the line for that one fleeting moment? The choice is clear.
